Day1: -Introduction of the library-

           1) Librarian taught us how to use library.
           2) Divided students to group to do working sheet.
               - Divided each section and took pictures of it.
           3) Presented to other classmate what we found and learned from our activity.

Day2: -Paper work-: Ideas for research topic-

           1) We decided the topic from ideas for a research topic paper.
           2) How to use the school library homepage. (Sources)
           3)  Library research: Explore the library web site.

Day3 - Developed our topic with classmates-

           1) We threw the paper and got suggestion for our topic.
           2) Use the library database to find sources.
           3) Concept map (Bubble)

          * What did we do?
            - Talked about our topic, organization, and found our key words.

Day4 - Created our blog, stated to find information-

          1) Pair work
          2) We made three questions which related our topic from the work on last week, then we
              watched the video and found out the answers.
          2) Found some key words from our topic.
          3) After we came up with key words, we started to search sources that match our topic.
             (Specically)

           * What did we do?
            - Search some videos about disability from library Film of Demands.

          1) We used computer to continue research.

           * What did we do?
           - We talked and organized our outline.

Day7 -Meeting with teacher-

         1) Discuss about our process with teacher.She gave me some suggestions about our topic.
         2) We fixed some details about our research.

           * What did we do?
            -Change our topic and categories.
                         ( Disability→Difference between Eastern and Western education system)

Final Reflection
The parts that we struggled with...

1. How did our research topic change and develop as we read
  - Until talked with Stephanie our topic was focused on disability, but we realized that the topic is too specific about education for children. So, we changed the topic.
 - We could get knowledge about food and parenting style which we choose.

2. What were the challenges?
⚫︎ Making the Concept map. ( It was difficult to decide the issues)
⚫︎ Finding specific sources.
⚫︎Reading and understanding for each articles which we found.
⚫︎Analyzing each articles.

3. What did we learn?
   - We learned how we find some specific sources from school library.
   - We recognized that how important making outline for research was.

4. What will I do differently for our next research project
   - We should spend more time on making our outline.
   - We should ask librarian if we can't find any matched sources on school library site.

Useful things while our research
- Using other method.

Unusable things while our research
- Couldn't find specific sources on the library website until we found good key words.

We still missing information about basic infomation about American and Japanese school systems.
( Advantage and Disadvantage)

We decided to combine the two articles about Japanese school food education system.

1)About Education; Japanese educators see merits in U.S.system

●When critics of American education are looking with envy to Japan's tough education standards, Japanese educators appear worried that their schools may be too tough. They are even turning to American school reformers for suggestions.

●They look for a national yardstick, Dr,Boyer said he think the quest is for a better balance between requirements and creativity, between standardize achievements and independence, between cramming and imagination.

●We have no national norms at all.

●Japanese education (kindergarten) is the climate is supportive. ( more than the U.S.?)

2) Parental Experiences of Children's Disabilities and Special Education in United States and Japan ; implications for School Social Work.

●Cultural beliefs about disability and special education.

●Parents Experiences with professionals

●Respect and Trust

●Systemic Services

●Special Education services in the United States and Japan

●Implications for school social worker's rules

●System support

●Empathy

3) Rules for Raising Japanese kids A new Education Ministry report reduces parents, giving guidelines for everything from playtime to holidays.

According to researchers, Japanese parenting has some problems from changing the fundamental tenets of Japanese society.

  • The report questions the fundamental tenets of modern Japanese society.
  • Basically, mothers aren't providing proper love and fathers aren't teaching discipline but recently, man is so busy at their work, so father can't spend time for their family and children.
  • In Japan has a problem about youth crime, truancy, and delinquency, because of lack of play time to family holidays.
  • Japanese see a child's development as a community responsibility.
  • Schools and parents are responsibility.
  • Japanese husbands think training and education are mother's job.
4) In Japan, school lunches help teach kids to eat right.

-One day school held a party for students who born in November.
 → It was ceremony but at the same time, it was the opportunity to teach students how to ideal with their eating habits.

* It is important to have 3 categories when people eat.
* (TREND)
1) Diversifying school lunches
2) Use local product rice and vegetables to help children to relate what they eat (recognize)
   -Offer buffet lunch twice a year for students to think about their health and what they eat (Every time school dietitian come to classroom and teach children)

5) On Japan’s school lunch menu

* U.S.A
1) Obesity is ✖3 past three decades
2) Make a law but it’s still have to reheat and frozen (Not much difference between cafeteria’s food)
* Japan
1) Obesity rate is always among the world’s lowest
→ It can see a lot of skinny children, but there is no people comes from malnutrition.
→ This is as a result of teaching food education in school
→ People live average 83 years in these days in Japan
* Japanese children in school will eat everything which they served
→ Japan did make student’s mind set (Part of education)
   There is no vending machine in school, so student must eat their
food even though they don’t like it
* Most school hire dietitian to work with pikey or unhealthy eater
* Japan success to cutting waste food under 5%
→ This is follow “Delicious School lunch” or “oishii kyuushyoku” program in order to get kids attention what they are eating
* 4 times a year students visit Fujii’s room and eat their lunch. Before they start eating she gives students 5 minutes speech about what they are going to eat and items on their plate that day.

6) Why Chinese Mother Are Superior

-  Chinese Mother -
   1) The mother thinks that nothing fun until their children are good at.
   2) They will say straight toward to their children if they can’t get good grade.
   3) Chinese mother believes that their children owe them everything (Children have to repay to their parents spend their full life)
   4) Chinese mother give up everything for their children
   5) Chinese mother wants to their children to have a lot of knowledge about their study so that their future will very bright and no one can take their knowledge from them
    *Chinese mother not allowed their children to play outside, sleep over at their friends house. They only allowed children to study or play and learn instruments.

                         -Western Parents-
  1) Tend to give up (Force children to do something)
  2) Ask kids to just try their best (Opposite from Chinese mother’s view)
  3) Westerns parents have to struggle with their personal feeling about achievements try to persuade themselves that they’re not disappointed about how kids are turn out
  4) Western parent think that children don’t owe them anything
    → They don’t choose their parent, to be born. It is responsibility for parent to provide them
  5) Western parents try to respect them individually

7) Japan slow in recognizing and dealing with learning disabilities

-America-
  1) Opportunity to take extra lesson
    → get a special assignments in a regular classroom
  2) Researchers put a lot of effort and worked very hard
  3) The disability (Dyslexia) accept in the U.S

-Japan-
   1) Still it is hard to get an opportunity to get extra lesson
     → Ignored and hurt/ People think labeling difference or backward
   2) Japan has working hard to change the notion of disability people
   3) Seeked help from school/ Foreign country
     → Send some information to Japan and methods that can help teachers and train them.
   4) Even though Japanese people’s understanding about disability people is 20 years behind the U.S, Japan still try to understand and learn about
disability people
   5) Japan does not accept Dyslexia as disability

    * If they couldn't gather enough students, they have to close their school and they also get into debt.
 3) Most of kids go to public school
 4) Homeschooling have been become popular since 1990's.
